The search engine finds relevant images in the gallery,
based on their title, keywords and other information.
Search targets are treated as individual words — please
note that you cannot use double quotes to mark a complete
phrase. The case of the words given does not matter, but
spelling has to be correct.
Punctuation is ignored, so that “anti-lock”, “antilock” and
“anti lock" all have the same effect. Common (Western
European) accented characters are treated as their plain
letter equivalents so that, for example, “pâté”
is handled the same as “pate”. All other non-ASCII characters
such as the more exotic accented letters and special symbols
are ignored.
As a special case, a search term consisting of a single year
such as “2014”, a range such as “1995-2001” (including
open-ended ranges such as “1990-” or “-2010”) or a decade such
as “1930s” will ensure that only images from the years
specified will be included in the search results, although
this can only be given once and any subsequent dates are
ignored. Note that these years must be between 1800 and 2099,
and that nonsensical ranges such as “2001-1995” will mean that
no results are shown.
However, if a year or year range is given along with other
search items, images that only match the year(s) specified
will not be included in the results. For example, a search
for “2009” will show all images from that year, but a search
for “2009 helicopter” will only show images from 2009 that
also match the word “helicopter”; other images from 2009 will
not be shown.
